       ASK ROD

Some over the weekend questions:

COMING OF AGE

Where can we find a poem written by RMc? About his daughters' different stages in life? Ending in her marriage? Would appreciate any help you can give, thanks. John Warren

I remember reading a cycle of poems written by Rod and published in Woman’s Own magazine back in the seventies. Where can I find a copy? Has it been published in a book? Lauren, Kent, England

Dear Lauren & John. The Cycle of poems you both speak about was entitled "The Unfolding World of A Child" and was written for and serialized in Women’s Own Magazine. Later under the title Coming of Age, I used several of the poems in the London Edition of "Moment To Moment", they were dropped from the book after the first edition when I decided to take it a different direction.

Over the years I’ve thought about including them in another work or maybe as part of an omnibus. Thanks for the interest. Rod

MAIL ORDER, AT LAST & THAT INCLUDES "THE SEA"

Rod, Mark here in Oklahoma, So tell me, when will you be offering CD’s and records over the net for mail order? I have listened to your music for over 20 years, you have had a wonderful effect on my world views, I hope to hear more in the future. Mark

Hi, I am wondering if there are copies of The Sea LP still available or if the LP has been transferred to CD and is available in that format. Thanks, Doug Clinkenbeard

Dear Mark & Doug. Yes & Yes. As some of you know, a young man named Dwight Michael’s has started an experiment; He wants to see if Stanyan Mail Order can be made to work again. So from now till Christmas he’s selected a dozen or so items from The Stanyan Catalog and is selling them by mail. Wonder of wonders he has all three configurations on "The Sea", Compact Disc, Cassette & LP. Nothing yet on "The Earth" & "The Sky" but for a complete listing of books & discs available and the prices, check out the home page. This tryout is only scheduled to run through the first of January, but if there is sufficient interest in may become a permanent fixture,

LONESOME CITIES

Dear Rod, First, let me tell you what sheer delight it was to discover that Lonesome Cities had been "put back together" on CD. Pieces of that project in collections were a tease at best and, at worst, part of a dismembered body. The project was and now IS wonderful! Thank you. Dave Herbst

Dear Dave, Yes & No. "Lonesome Cities" has been put back together all right, but not exactly as it was in the first place. Let me explain - turns out the Master Tapes have been at Warner Bros. Records all these years. What was released on CD a couple of years back and is now also available through the catalogue is a temporary master from the Stanyan Basement. Who had to point this out to me? A couple of knowledgeable young men who frequent tara’s RM Message Board. Good news is it’s complete, just some alternate takes, the price is right & there’s an unlisted bonus track at the end from one of my piano quartets. The original Lonesome Cities with many bonus tracks will be released in the future. I’ll get to a couple of the other albums you asked about, Dave, in a later column. Rod

Rod's random thoughts On deceit: once a philanthropist, twice a fool.

Gentleness is proof of dignity.

Cease to struggle and you cease to live.

Those of us that turned out sound should look across our shoulders once and help the weak ones to their feet. It only takes an outstretched hand.

THE EYE INSIDE ME

The ‘I’ inside me
asks a single question
one that starts out ‘Why ?’
I can’t remember how
to finish off the sentence.

The tomcat I call Tom
goes by eying me.
What does that intelligent animal
of grace and independence see ?
Does he see dawns so perfect
that I may never know them,
evenings ending not in struggle
but in peace
even alone, in peace ?

God, I am so hungry
I need to eat and drink
        love at last
I wouldn’t ask that much
I need a week
a half week
a day
some little time shared
some time not left alone.
I need to wrap my limbs around
a trunk that’s strong
but one that melts beneath me.
I pray this autumn won’t overtake me
here alone
and that I might finish off
the question that starts out ‘Why ?’

You’ve known me to be truthful sometimes
believe me now.
