A Thought for Today

When it comes to quarreling, remember to remember to forget.

GOOD MORNING

In Southern California the last week of October 2003 will be remembered as one that changed thousands of lives. As I write this we have four wildfires that are out of control. Thirteen people have been confirmed dead, thousands of acres have been scorched and more than one hundred homes are lost. None of the fires are under control, exhausted fire fighters will be getting help from neighboring states but the weather forecast offers no relief to the continuing three digit temperature readings from Bakersfield to San Diego.

There are disasters every day all over the country and around the world and for the last several years my home state has been luckier than most, statistically we are long overdue for our helping of Nature’s fury, of course that knowledge doesn’t make it any easier to get through. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Saturday Night’s salute to the team of John Kander & Fred Ebb “Sing Happy”, was a winner on every level. Liza Minnelli looking fit and sounding glorious topped off a three hour evening that featured among others Carol Channing singing “Razzle Dazzle,” John C. Reilly recreating his Academy Award nominated performance of “Mr. Cellophane” from last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner “Chicago.” I got to sing one of my favorite songs, “My Coloring Book.”

I hope I get a chance to write about the evening in more depth but meanwhile I’m pretty sure you will be hearing about it in on the message boards from those of us in “our family” who attended.

Speaking of Message and Bulletin Boards, I keep hearing about something called “The Forum” that is supposed to be aligned with me or Stanyan which is, frankly, news to me. If any of you out there know of such a bulletin board please write and tell me about it. I really am clueless about this one. I even returned a check that was sent to me to defray the cost of The Forum. For the record I have never solicited contributions for anything to do with A Safe Place to Land, any message board, “Forum” or whatever and, God willing, I never will.

If it walks like a scam and talks like a scam, it must be a scam. Again, please, please, if any of you know anything about something called “The Forum”, “Stanyan Forum,” “McKuen Forum” or anything passing itself off as a discussion group of my work, or me I’d appreciate hearing from you. Let’s keep each other informed here.

Apparently somebody has a Play Dough, Pay for Play, Pay Dirt, Take the Money & Run (or whatever that net term is) account where he or she is soliciting contributions to keep the so called “Forum” going. Hmmm.

BEST JOKE OF THE WEEK

A former employee of Stanyan informed me this week that he has registered the name Stanyan By Mail in his name & should I care to buy it from him he is willing to sell it to me. (Hey, we can’t make these things up.) Reminds me of a guy who registered my name (misspelled, no less and wanted five grand to sell it back to me.) As most of you know that crap doesn’t work any more and the government is cracking down on this racket. Quick Poll: Should I send this correspondence to my senator, Better Business Bureau, lawyer or should I print it here? Maybe all of the above. You make the call.

Me taken in by attempted extortion? I don’t think so.

The Stanyan House will open for business as planned the first week of November, so those of you who have been unconvinced by Stanyan By Mail’s closing, hang on a bit. Over the holidays the new Chat Room and Bulletin Board (planned since 1998) "The Stanyan Bar & Grill" will be up and running too.

To all of you out there, Sleep Warm. Keep the same faith in me that I’ve always kept in you. Like I’ve always said, I don’t expect loyalty from my friends, I assume it. And, you always come through.

Rod's random thoughts How we respect the rights of others is usually a good way of measuring how we feel about ourselves.

Good is positive; evil not merely negative, but primitive.

Love works best when we don’t work at it.

FROM THE OBSERVATION DECK

The silence is crowing because the cock is silent.

A gaggle of philosophers gather at the corner
in unmarked cars. Later they will be arrested
for reconnoitering.

A Cheshire cat with false mustache
and blinders on is directing traffic.

Greeks caught gifting bears with retsina
have been taken to an asylum in North Carolina.

Last week's politicians are still carrying boxes
of worn-out grudges. Goodwill Industries has refused
to accept them as tax-free donation.

Several dogs are meowing and with good reason.

A television interviewer is inventing history by giving
the shrubbery cue cards. He has interviewed a local
Stop Sign and is setting up for Go. Yellow flashes
and he becomes confused. He is fired for staging a
crosswalk fight.

A mail-order bride has reached the dead letter office
and is opening her wedding presents.

Hannibal is crossing an elephant with ice.
He hopes to get a highball that remembers.

The government of a capitalist country is being
cheered by its people for doing good works.

(Which one of the preceding statements is false?)
