A Thought for Today

Truth sometimes hurts, but seldom does it kill.

This One Does It For Me!

Dear Ken,

I was just wondering, as geezerdom ever more rapidly approaches, if there is as yet any further development in the "The Earth" and "The Sky" CDs and The Bear Family CD set. I have the feeling there's a story here but you're not allowed to tell anybody because then you'd have to kill them. But I'd be willing to bet at the very least that the Bear Family set is dead for reasons the fans will never officially be told.

The other thing I have to say is outright heresy, so I apologise in advance.

Try as I have, lo these many years, I just don't get anything from about 90% of Rod's "poetry." (I realize it's pointless to explain because he's done extremely well without me.) But what I DO love is his song lyrics. So I was wondering if you'd consider reprinting his song lyrics on the website every other day for the next few months. I've always wished he'd put out a book with ALL his lyrics, instead of bits and pieces here and there, but as I learned early in life: one word from me and nothing changes. (But it can't hurt to ask.)

Hope you and yours are well and happy.

Regards,

Glen

Thanks for your note, Glen. With regard to your question about the Bear set I'll refer you to Rod's Flight Plan of yesterday when he announced that it's very definitely still on the cards. You'll read about a release date right here as soon as we know what it is.

The balance of the San Sebastian Strings albums are also still on the cards but no release date for them either. Stay tuned.

As for reprinting song lyrics - that's kinda what we do here every Wednesday. Rod has always felt that lyrics aren't strong enough to stand on their own sans the score but like you I love his lyrics and try to sneak as many as I can in when I think he isn't looking.

You want more lyrics? Just let me know which ones and I'll be only too happy to oblige. I'm not sure a book of collected lyrics will happen anytime soon, though. Lots of other projects on the go right now but I'll add your idea to the list.

So a song lyric it is for today, a big one at that. In fact they don't come any bigger and I hope you enjoy it.

Rod's random thoughts It doesn't have to be a happy life, but it ought to be a full one.

Hate diminishes our capacity for love.

It's not the camera lying, only the friend who sees the picture.

IF YOU GO AWAY

If you go away on this summer day
then you might as well take the sun away
all the birds that flew in the summer sky
when our love was new and our hearts were high
when the day was long and the night was warm
and the moon stood still for the nightbird’s song
if you go away, if you go away
if you go away, if you go away.

But if you stay, I’ll make you a day
like no day has been, or will be again
we’ll ride on the rain, we’ll sail on your touch
I’ll talk to your eyes, that I love so much
then if you go, go I won’t cry
though the good is gone, from the word goodbye
if you go away, if you go away
if you go away, if you go away.

If you go away, as I know you will
you must tell the world to stop turning
till you return again, if you ever do
for what good is love without loving you
can I tell you now, as you turn to go
I’ll be dying slowly till the next Hello
if you go away, if you go away
if you go away, if you go away.

But if you stay, I’ll make you a night
like no night has been, or will be again
we’ll ride on the rain, we’ll sail on your touch
I’ll worship your eyes, that I love so much
then if you go, I’ll understand
leave me just enough love to fill up my hand
if you go away, if you go away
if you go away, if you go away.

If you go away, as I know you must
there’ll be nothing left in the world to trust
just an empty room, full of empty space
like the empty look I see on your face
I’d have been the shadow of your dog
if I thought it might have kept me by your side
if you go away, if you go away
please... don’t go away.
