A Thought for Today

Where the day takes us is up to us.

TO BEGIN WITH

Most of today’s mail is about the shows at Buddy Greco’s.

COMMENTS ABOUT JAY’S PHOTO

Here’s what I said in the November 17 & 18 Flight Plan about one of the photographs Jay took at the final Saturday Night show and with it some responses.

"Jay Hagan took the photograph above during the final performance at Greco’s on Saturday Night. I like it because of my total lack of expression. While this is not exactly the preferred stance before an audience there’s a key on my back that when turned just right provides a certain degree of animation."

Total lack of expression? The eyes tell the tale my friend, and my what tales they tell. love, BJ

~~~
Hard to tell what you are thinking in Jay’s intriguing photograph. Maybe contemplating a martini after the show? Joeseph Winnians
~~~

You look like the cat who ate the canary and we all ate it up. I was at the Friday Night Show and you were dazzling. One of your best performances ever. Alan G.

~~~
The photograph? I liked it a lot, you should make it your official 8X10 Glossy. Claudia Anderson
~~~

Jay’s photograph is very elegant and I like the new casual one by Chuck Hesse at the top of the Flight Plan. L. D. Phoenix

Thanks for the comments about the picture. I think the look on your face is more one of satisfaction at a job well done. Jay

A NEW SONG

Hi Rod, Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the shows at Buddy Greco's. You were great, as usual! And a special "Thank You" for doing the Brel song you've been working on. I loved it. Hope you're feeling better. See you in Feb. Love, Ann

Dear Ann, Thank You. It always cheers me to see you.

As for the new song, wait till you hear it in February. I've been working a lot more on it and feel I'm finally closer to what I wanted to realize from our unfinished opus.

Still recuperating but feeling much better. Luv, Rod

MORE THAN POLITICS

Rod...I attended your performance Saturday evening and want you to know how very much I enjoyed seeing you again. I'm sure you'll recall that we had a political difference of opinion a short time ago. I did not get the opportunity to meet with you backstage as they announced you'd gone to your room to rest for the 11:00 show. Our drive was such that we could not attend the late performance. Again, thanks so much for scheduling this one time only show for 2008. Always Your Fan, Elaine Hatcher.

Dear Elaine, My apologies for not being out front between the two Saturday night shows. I ended up spending that hour trying in vain to program the second show. I say in vain because I ended up doing mostly requests shouted out by the audience.

I enjoyed our political discourse prior to the election and I’m sorry your team lost but, of course, delighted that mine won. The country is in such a mess at the moment that frankly I don’t envy anyone who winds up having to lead it. I’m pleased that Obama seems to be reaching out to both parties because it will take all of the talent he surrounds himself with to help bring America back to the kind of country we have become familiar with for so long. That certainly includes the good will and hard work of McCain.

As to our meeting up, it will happen. Thanks for the kind words regarding the show. I really did enjoy myself and I’m sorry for the late and long drive you had home. With affection, Rod.

CONTINUED HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for such a special concert on November 7th, 2008 at Buddy Greco's. It was my Birthday and my sisters, daughter, and myself flew in special for the 7th. You were wonderful and now I wish I would have purchased tickets for each night! Thank you so much for autographing my "Listen to the Warm" book and my new CD. The book is my favorite and I have had it since 1968.
I do hope that you will be able to have time for another concert in such a wonderful setting and I will be watching and reading your website for your next concert.

Thank you once again for making my birthday such a wonderful day! Jill K.

Dear Jill, Thanks for the great e-mail and most of all for deciding to share your birthday with me. I loved seeing your early edition of Listen to the Warm and knowing you’ve had it all these years.

I loved the intimacy of Buddy Greco’s and my next two appearances will be pretty intimate too. Both halls have proscenium stages and seat about 600 each. The dates are Friday, February 13, Kiva Ballroom, Sun City Grand, Surprise, AZ (That’s Phoenix). 7:30 pm, all seats reserved, $27.50.

For lovers and those with triskaidekaphobia on the following night, Saturday, February 14th, St. Valentine’s Day, I’ll be at The Happy Trails Resort, Surprise, AZ, 7:00 PM, reserved seats, $25.00. Guess in addition to “My Funny Valentine” I’ll have to learn Dale Evans “Happy Trails To You” for this one.

Can’t wait to hear my ace guitarist John Volt play this one on the guitar or possibly ukulele.

Tickets for both shows are available online at:

www.curtaincallusa.com/tickets.html.

In addition to his superb string work Johnny is the chick magnet in our band of merrymakers and is often referred to as “eye candy.” Must be tough being young, talented and good-looking.

Again Jill. Thanks so much for letting all of us help celebrate your birthday. Continued Happy Returns and warm wishes, Rod

EUROPEAN CONCERTS

Hello Rod, Might there be any European tour dates in 2009,
Particularly London? Thanks, Lou

Dear Lou, Nothing definite as far as actual dates go but my concert manager Jerry Lonn is investigating several offers we've had for me to tour next year outside of the United States including Europe. Nothing from Great Britain as yet but I'm pretty sure we'll start announcing overseas engagements in January if not a bit sooner. There’s a rumor going around that I’ll be part of a Jazz Festival in Holland in the spring.

I'm putting you on our mailing list and as soon as dates are firm you will be notified and keep checking the website because Webmaster Ken often announces concerts and appearances even sooner. Thanks for asking Lou and all the best. Cheers, Rod

Rod's random thoughts Concentrate on what is human, the sublime can take care of itself.

Truth doesn't need anybody. It is what it is.

Love, like magic, depends on believing.

COMES THE COLORS

We prop old dreams against the wall
colors of the new-found day and night
                           our lexicon.
To each his own sweet tongue, I know,
but let our budding language be
not one of shadows but of shades and hues
drawn from that great roulette, rainbow wheel.

Armed with vivid, not with grays
we will hunt, track down and bring the old
                      to new reality.
Apollo has no lesser temple than shy Venus,
only different highways lead us
              to her hideaway.
As war is but a breath away from peace
so too contentment is the last door entered.

What colors.
What stately and barbaric hews
the unexpected summer in midwinter brings.
It is the night wind once more pianissimo
soft-pedaling its wares.
What splendid cloth, what merchandise,
kaleidoscopic sunsets twice around.

Go gingerly.
Or better still, come go with me.
Our ears have always heard like music.

-from Suspension Bridge, 1984

    AND FINALLY

Those of us alive on November 22, 1963 will always remember where we were when we heard the news of the death of our 35th President, John F. Kennedy. I was shopping for a toaster in the old Sears store on Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.

For the next three days and nights the streets in most every city in America were deserted as we all gathered around TV sets to watch the unfolding story of our young leader cut down in his prime. A terrible anniversary, but one that ought to always be acknowledged.

Sleep warm and have a safe and thoughtful weekend.
