Rod's random thoughts Never be afraid to be ambitious toward honor.

As long as we have children, we are of independent means.

Railroad trains are like a train of thought, not easily set out of mind.

LOS HOMBRES

They come before dawn
with rifles and dogs
and fenced-in flatbed trucks,
a man has to be
a fool to be caught
unless he's asleep
or making love
( both forbidden
         if one would live ).

Bandits they are
with beards over ears
smiling as each ripe head
         they crack open
spills its watermelon seeds
and rolls down to the gutter.

Early this morning
they killed a guitar
and laughed as its splinters
         spilt the air.
There is no armor
against Los Hombres -
their bayonets slice steel.

And where are
the carpenters of the sun
when the mob comes riding in -
lost or dead or locked away ?
Poisoned in beds
without turning over
to meet their destroyers' eyes.
And all the funeral gardenias
                 are dead
used up in an earlier revolution.
