       UPS & DOWNS

A number of Rod's friends passed away during 1998, some good friends, so I doubt he'll look back on this year with any great degree of fondness.

Th upside of '98, though, was the opportunity he had of celebrating a couple of weddings. First off were tara and Bill and this is the Flight Plan from September 11.

                             - Ken, Johannesburg, December 20

TARA AND BILL

Be good to one another.. Be honest. Be apologetic when you're wrong and never reproachful when you are right.. Love is more obligated to breakfast than bed. As lovers we eat together and cope together and learn to reason with and respect each other more than we sleep with and make love to one another.

Love is such a gift. No one can write a proper thank you note for receiving it or praise it enough to say what it really is, the meeting of alike minds and hearts; the willingness to commit, the ability to leave self to take care of itself while you concentrate on making it easier for another.

To my friends tara and Bill: A long and happy life together. May you live and love to be a hundred and may I be the last one to tell you goodnight.

                   Love and friendship, Rod. 9/11/98

notable birthdays Hortense Calisher o Charlie Callas o Irene Dunne o Harvey Firestone o George Roy Hill o Max Lerner o Janet Reed o Audrey Trotter o Kim Weston
Rod's random thoughts Don't bury love. Never let inattention grow over it like weeds.
Make every day you stay together an anniversary of the day before.

A soldier doesn't need to grunt to be a soldier and a lover needn't pant to make his point.

Keep the smiles coming, even as the year runs out.

It's nice to be two on September nights or anytime.

III EVENSONG

If love were all I had to give
I'd give it and be done.
There are no others anywhere, not one
It is for your own breath I live.
God gives me no alternative.
And I have looked not left nor right
Since sighting you within my sight.
You are for me the only time imperative.

Oh, let me be the one who lies
Against your side for always and
Inside your size, inside your sighs
To do whatever you command,
And see what you would have me see.
I am your bread, partake of me.
