A Thought for Today

Friendship is a seed once sown that’s better cultivated in the practice.

This One Does It For Me!

Ken,

Many, many years ago a relatively unheralded movie, "Me, Natalie," caught my attention.

I loved the score and the song "We" has stayed with me for years. Would it be possible for you to send me the lyrics?

Best Wishes,

Kit Norman

Terrific choice, Kit.

"We" was a collaboration between Rod and the doyen of film scores Henry Mancini. Here's what Rod had to say about this wonderfully talented man.

Some Thoughts on Mancini Music

We have always had isolated movie themes that became hits, but there is no composer in Hollywood who has had so many entire scores and albums that sold like single records. Not only does Henry Mancini deserve his position as the most influential composer in popular music today, but he has paved the way for so many of us that we owe him a debt of gratitude we can very probably never replay. He has shown us that while advancing the action of a film and helping to set the mood, movie music can and should stand on its own, away from the picture.

I have known Hank now for a long time (since I was an actor and he was a staff composer - arranger at Universal Pictures) and I can’t remember ever hearing a Mancini score I didn’t like. Everybody’s favorite is probably Breakfast at Tiffany’s. My favorites are Two for the Road and this score from Me, Natalie. I feel very lucky to have been reunited with Hank to write and sing the lyrics in the film.

On accepting an Academy Award some years ago, one Hollywood composer thanked Beethoven, Bach and Brahms for the honor. Quite right. Henry Mancini has only to thank his mother and father. I thank them too.

Rod's random thoughts The guarantee for finding sanity again is finding love again and giving over to the new beloved that one facet of yourself that you held back the last time.

Time is a runner, and not with good intentions.

Discretion only requires a lowering of the eyes.

WE

We run together from the darkness
on a yellow August morning
so the warm will make us free.

We rise up early in the morning
just to see the sun come singing
till it falls into the sea.

Some people live just for tomorrow
some see as far as today
some go their own road
some every known road
never find their way.

But we chase the wind into forever
past a thousand rainy mornings
and as our love moves into evening
we’ll be known as only ... we.
