A Thought for Today

Love is another word for Christmas.

FROM the¨BOOKS

To get you in the holiday mood here are some winter poems.

Snowflakes in the Wine

It rained today, all day
everything was the sound of rain.

Children laughing in the streets
                       police whistles
cars splashing mud at one another
even the music on the radio
sounded like the rain.

Tonight the storm is nearly over.

I walked down by the railway station
to watch the trains come in
and not once was I asked the time
nor did a stranger stop and want a light.

Sometimes on rainy nights
I forgot I'm in a foreign country.

It's about twelve-thirty now.
Most everyone has gone to bed.
Something is pushing me,
                    making me think.

I miss you.

-from the album "Winter," 1972

The Singer and the Song

Jesus, can you hear me singing?
Is my voice tuned loud enough?
Am I mixing with the choir
or soloing an edge out front?

Jesus, at the echo's ending
is my song still strong and true
or has it blended with the mudlark
and been lost in silver forests?

Jesus, is an answer coming
to the prayers I prayed before
or should I repeat them now
and settle down to wait again?

Jesus, pardon me for asking
but will you grant me one more hour
to your own or to my liking
so that I might work with you?

-from “The Carol of Christmas,” 1971

Rod's random thoughts If we kept Christmas every day apologies would be unnecessary.

It is not the iceberg we remember - the snowflakes only.

Imagination always deserves a hearing.

SWEET SEASON

Here in
the California winter
a mile away from snow
we hike down through
the holidays happily
but not so hurriedly
that we forget
our friends who celebrate
this same sweet season
beneath the southern sun.

And may we never
              once forget
the birthday of God’s Son.

Good God give us more
than just our daily bread.
Pride in what we do for you,
hope for every new tomorrow,
love for all things living.
And as we forage in the New Year
let our foraging be done
                      in your name only.

Make the songs we sing
songs of praise
                 and not of glory
God of our fathers
Be the one our singing turns to
As this Christmas passes into history.
