A Thought for Today

The heart has its reasons.

TWO SELECTIONS FROM THE ALBUM “FOR LOVERS”

I’ll Carry Home An Orchard

If you like apples
then I’ll carry home an orchard
if sky is to your liking
I’ll bundle up the skies of summer
so you’ll never need to know
the winter evening anymore.

I like the fire
and so I wait for winter nights
apples I can take or leave.

Your body
like your mind
has need of going over
and I intend to be a journeyman
of your soft skin
for years to come.

Looking Up Through Wednesday’s Silence

There is always
the tick-tock of time
         and getting inside each other
is like trying to make an old clock right again
trying to make somebody else’s music
                                           fit our words.

You wonder sometimes
if there will ever be enough time
in this life or the next
to put ourselves in place
to get one another right
                        for sure.

When I believe
I’ve finally stumbled on to who you really are
        and what you’re about
I wake up and find somebody else
on the pillow next to me.

You change.
We change.
And looking up
through Wednesday’s silence
I wondered where you’d gone to
even though you were lying next to me.

Rod's random thoughts How can we assume such easiness with each other and still remain so insecure.

Love works best when we don’t work at it.

Love doesn't call for caution, as life does not depend on one man's way of living it.

LA RONDE

Call out to a passing stranger.
                  Say hello, bon soir.
The no-more stranger
                      in return
will give like greeting to another
who will keep it going
until the circle comes
                        full circle.

Hoist up a flag of gold and green
               Spring and Autumn intertwined,
and you will find each season
                         waving to the others
until all four join hands,
their borders blurring.

Take child and second child
                    to your side
so close that walking
                   is a single act
and you will find one shadow only.

Take anything that takes you
                        from yourself
and less will have less time
                                  to build
self-sympathy in ample store.
More than taking, plant and give -
the harvest will be bountiful.

I leave off writing
         and begin to read.
