A Thought for Today

Joy is contagious, spread a little of it every chance you get.

FROM the¨BOOKS

SOME TRAVELING MUSIC

How can you say something new
about being alone?
Tell somebody you're a loner
and right away they think you're lonely.
It's not the same thing, you know.
It's not wanting to put
all your marbles in one pocket.
It's caring enough
not to care too much.
Mostly,
it's letting yourself
come first for awhile.
One day I'll find an island,
a think place
go there with a mess of records
and a ukelele
and just sit strummin'.
I might even do some thinkin',
about the women
and the towns I've left behind.

-written for the Frank Sinatra album "A Man Alone", 1968

Rod's random thoughts Love is another word for Christmas.

We cannot close out the cold, not if it's within ourselves.

If we kept Christmas every day apologies would be unnecessary.

THE VIRGIN

Too much was asked of one small virgin
that she should be an architect
and labor as a workman does
yet do so in an angel's guise.

Those of us who think ourselves experienced
are given scriptures as The Daily News
and told beyond all doubt that they are fact.
Present fiction has a truer ring
than some old writings of another time.

Men have sailed beyond the ocean's edge
and even walked out on the moon;
why not a virgin birth?
Well. There was no television then
and Norman Mailer had no notes
he'd scribbled at the scene.

Still, if man today can build with vision
and tear down with lack of conscience,
yesterday's young virgin's giving birth
is hardly miracle enough to turn our heads.
The marvel is that some of us are still around
to celebrate this august birthday once again.
