A Thought for Today

You will grow more if you attempt to travel with giants.

Thanks to the clearing out of old office furniture by my wife's employers I recently became the proud owner of a new (to me) desk and filing cabinet. Having worked on an old metal trestle table for the last five years the luxury of having a workspace with drawers is beyond description.

Of course the arrival of the filing cabinet (a lovely piece of oak furniture) necessitated an office spring clean and the sorting out of a ton of old papers and "stuff" and it was during this process I came across my correspondence with Rod concerning the launch of this web site back in 1998.

The story goes something like this:

After being pointed in the right direction by tara Schofield and Ken Ball, I'd made my pitch to Rod and received a long letter in reply giving beaucoup reasons why the creation of an official McKuen web site was not a good idea. I'd responded to his misgivings as best I could and was now waiting for yet another reply.

Rod, by his own admission, sometimes takes awhile to respond to letters. He and I are a lot alike in this respect - when we don't know what to do, we do nothing. I kept prodding him with what I hoped were well reasoned faxes (this, would you believe, was how we communicated back then) and eventually back came a fax in his own handwriting saying "Ken, let's try and do it". So we did it.

As you can imagine waiting for the go-ahead was a trying time for me and driving to work each morning I kept asking myself "when am I going to hear from Rod?". The answer that always came to mind was "one day soon". Hey, wasn't that a song? Sure it was. Wasn't that a McKuen song? Of course it was.

And so it was that "One Day Soon" became my driving/waiting for Rod song and the lyrics are posted below for your enjoyment. If you ever find yourself waiting for something to happen, give this song a listen while driving and you may be surprised at the results.

It certainly worked for me.

Rod's random thoughts God gets the best out of us; the worst is up for grabs.

Imagination never dictates - but always deserves a hearing.

The pessimist knows very little at all. Only that he's tired of learning.

ONE DAY SOON

I may not find the clover
but at least I will have tried
and who knows, maybe one day soon
I’ll catch the wave and ride.

From here to way out yonder
somewhere beyond somewhere
where love’s as familiar
as the back of my hand
and safe as breathing air.

I may not find the rainbow
but at least I’ll have a try
and who knows, maybe one day soon
I’ll tell the town goodbye.

And start off on my journey
to find what I must find
a place where love’s as real as the rain
and not just a word in the mind.

One day soon...
I’ll go with the giant’s up the hill
and love’ll come running after me
it will... it will... it will...

So, all the good luck pennies
where only made for those
who don’t believe that one day soon
they’ll learn what the giant knows.

That hope’s for little people
until love makes them tall
I’ll walk with the giants one day soon
I’m tired of being small.

One day soon... one day soon... one day soon...
