A Thought for Today

If the sea did not make me, at the very least it rubbed me, rolled me out of darkness into light. For I have seen my past and future on the whitecaps dancing out beyond a thousand shorelines.

This One Does It For Me!

Ken,

Most McKuen fans have vivid memories of the San Sebastian Strings albums. The world wishes they'd be issued on CD. They do it for me every time.

I was listening to Home to the Sea and For Lovers a while ago, and I started thinking of how well we know the voices and the music on these LPs. For me they're 30 year friends, some longer. Frequently I want to call up Rod or Anita or Jesse and just talk about the whole production of these wonderful treasures, but of course we can't. Unfortunately Jesse is gone, but the point remains.

I know there's a careful line between admiration and intrusion, but I find myself thinking about them all going to dinner after the sessions, and the conversation about their gentle art. How to fix that problem with So Much For The Pipers...could we get a little more quiet on Around the Bend Ahead? I wish we could get to know Anita better. Are there tapes of Jesse trying to get things right?

Perhaps you could talk Rod into occasionally revealing some anecdotes about these people, and maybe even some pictures of the sessions. They are our life long friends, after all. Exactly what he was talking about all these years make us miss them on a very personal basis.

Nice letter, Jack, and I think a lot of us agree with the sentiments you expressed.

A continuing dream of mine, and I stress at this stage it's only a dream, is that one day we'll see all the SSS albums released on CD in one glorious, gigantic boxed set. What a day that will be if it ever comes to pass!

As for stories about Anita and Jesse - well, from time to time Rod has written at some length about both of them. A search through the archives using our Google Search Engine should bring most of them to light.

Some time ago I wrote Anita asking her to participate in an interview for the proposed Library on the Stanyan House site. I haven't heard back from her yet but when I do, and when the library is open for business, you'll read about it right here. Meanwhile you can check out her relatively new web site at www.anitakerr.com

If you have a favorite McKuen song or poem you'd like featured here, or a question to pose, drop me a line at kenb@mckuen.com and I'll make sure your letter is featured right here one Wednesday soon.

Rod's random thoughts Don’t go yet, there’s got to be some sea coast we’ve not seen. Hold on to me and we’ll go flying through the spring.

The sea invents, we rearrange. The sea takes out a patent, we infringe. The sea holds all the copyrights to all the most important works, speaking truth that even time won’t change. And still we steal from her.

The sea eats up the men who love her most, the way the killer queen must finally one day reject the troops who fought for her on battlefields and rolled with her in bedrooms. I am not afraid.

NO LOVING WITHOUT LOSING

There is no loving... without losing.
You lose yourself to become part of somebody else.
That’s just how it is.

I didn’t expect to remain the same but...
oh I guess I didn’t know what to expect.

It’s different every time though.
A new language invented.
A new system stumbled on...
       different from the old one.
A new way of engaging and disengaging ourselves
                                from each other.

God knows how often I’ve looked into your eyes
but do you know... when I’m gone from you
no matter how I try to remember
                sometimes I forget the color.

Yes... I’ve lost some things...
ties and shirts you didn’t like
friends you didn’t approve of.

I’d get clobbered in a game of touch now
even with someone my own age.
Sometimes I feel I’m out of practice
       with people too now.

Well... what would I do...
if you went off or something happened ?

I’m not equipped anymore for relating to someone else.
I’ve lost... oh only Jesus knows what I’ve lost.
‘Cause there is no loving without losing something.

What I’ve gained from being with you...
besides a belly and a deeper beard...
        I guess I couldn’t get anywhere else.

And I’ll be damned if I’ll ever try.
