THIS ONE DOES IT FOR ME!

A Thought for Today

October isn't just the month we wait for frost, it is the time frost waits to tell us that it's time for a change ....... that change is coming whether we approve or not.

Dear Ken,

In response to your request for examples of Rod's songs bringing back memories...

In 1971, living in South Africa, I had a new girlfriend who later became and is my wife. My father bought me a new Rod McKuen album for my birthday (I was already hooked by then). So happy was I in my new state of love that it seemed that the words of the second track 'All I Need' could have been written for me. It seemed to express everything I felt. I still sing that song to myself in quiet moments and the lyric and the lovely melody take me back so vividly to a wonderful time.

Most of Rod's songs take me to a place and time which is as clear in my mind as if it were yesterday...the magic of music..... the magic of Mckuen....

Thanks for running this series - a great idea.

While I am at it Ken, I have to take the opportunity to thank you for your obvious hard work and dedication in maintaining this site. To many of us Rod freaks, for so long it seemed that we had lost touch with him forever. To be able to click a few mouse buttons and see what he is thinking today is more than one could ever have dreamed of.

Thanks so much Ken.

Regards

Sam Sharp

Good choice, Sam. I remember so clearly the day "New Ballads" was released in South Africa and even now it remains one of my favorites.Like most of my old vinyl albums it's showing plenty of wear and tear and I can't wait for the day it's released on CD.

I still have a pile of memories to share with you, from all manner of fans. If you haven't yet submitted your favorite, drop me a line at ken@mckuen.com and I'll make sure it's included one Wednesday.

Rod's random thoughts A love that dominates is not love but the most ill-gotten and ill-used form of possessiveness.

So few promises are kept these days that credibility must be stiched together from half-truths. That should not cause despair, only diligence.

ALL I NEED

How many people
have so much to live for
how many people... indeed
can say to the daylight
that eats up the darkness
I've got all I need.

Mornings and evenings
clear through the nighttime
I go wherever you lead
yours is the face
yours are the shoulders
and your hand's all I need.

Turning my clock to the wall
I fall down in your arms
then like the Phoenix
I rise again
your touch my only alarm.

So once in the morning
and once in the evening
I look in your eyes and I read
enough love to last me
the rest of my lifetime
all I'll ever need.

I've got all I need.
