A Thought for Today

Friendship never wears a mask. It removes the necessity for masquerading and false faces.

This One Does It For Me!

It's been awhile since I made a contribution to this column so today I'd like to rectify that omission.

This week all South African movie lovers should be celebrating as one of our local television stations, the free to air eTV, have scheduled "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie." It went out Monday for the first time and knowing the station as I do I have no doubt it will be repeated a number of times during the course of the next seven days.

Our foremost television critic Barry Ronge of The Sunday Times (who interviewed Rod on his radio show a few years back) has selected it as his "pick of the week" and quite rightly so. The broadcast Monday was late evening so I taped it to watch at my leisure this coming weekend. While checking that the recording went off without a hitch I was immediately charmed by the opening sequence of Maggie Smith bicycling through the streets of Edinburgh, a city in which I spent a number of my formative years. And what a thrill to read the opening credits - "Original musical score by Rod McKuen, arranged and conducted by Arthur Greenslade."

My wife Priscilla, the practical one in the family, commented that when the movie was first released back in 1969 she was still at school and now she's a lady of a certain age whose children have left home! Who cares, it will still make for some terrific viewing this weekend and I have just the bottle of South African Shiraz for the occasion.

The featured lyric today, taken from the soundtrack, is one of my all time favorite McKuen pieces.

The only thing we own without condition is experience.

To love somebody truly, it is not necessary to be false to all other relationships.

BEND DOWN AND TOUCH ME

Bend down and touch me with your eyes
make every morning hold a new surprise
and as I stumble from my sleep
yours is the first face that I’ll see.

As I amble through the day
be there to guide me all along my way
if I should stumble and I fall
your shoulder’s near enough to touch.

Follow me from darkness into light
then we’ll go back again through every midnight.

Bend down and touch me with your eyes
then every darkness holds a new surprise
so when I stumble into sleep
yours is the last face that I’ll see.

Bend down and touch me with your eyes
let every morning hold a new surprise
so when I stumble from my sleep
yours is the first face that I’ll see.

    AND FINALLY

A very Happy Birthday to Cecelia Salvesen, a good friend for almost forty years. Currently resident a short distance from Salt Lake City she and her family have double reason to celebrate as last Friday they finally became American citizens.

Congratulations on both counts and here's to the next forty!

We'll do this again next week. Meantime if you have a favorite McKuen song, poem or story you'd like to contribute, drop me a line at kenb@mckuen.com and I'll do the rest.
