A Thought for Today

Everything is possible with love, almost nothing works without it.

Dear Ken,

This one does it for me.

I feel so lucky to have been at Rod's concert at the College of Du Page on Saturday night. It was an unforgettable evening.

Rod was warm and funny and had the audience captivated by his charm. He delighted us by singing some new and old songs and had us laughing when he told jokes and came offstage to sing "Roller Coaster Blues". A special treat were his duets with Bob Gentry. The chemistry between Rod and Bob generated from their performance. Seeing Rod perform was a gift to all of us there.

After the show Rod patiently signed autographs for the many people waiting in line. It was a thrill to receive an unexpected hug and kiss from Rod, and it was an evening I will always remember.

Janice

Thanks, Janice. I thought it fitting we closed off this year's series of "This One Does It For Me" with your letter as we've had some pretty terrific concerts this year. You didn't specify a particular song or poem so I've chosen the lyrics from what Rod has now made his opening number, "If I Could Fly".

Thanks to all who've contributed to this column over the past year. Your letters and choices have always been interesting, teaching me a whole lot more about Rod's work and introducing me to a host of new friends. I'm a lucky man.

For the next couple of weeks, over the holiday period, I'll devote this space to a variety of topics so make sure you join me. Your regular column will resume early in the New Year.

Rod's random thoughts If you believe in nothing, expect nothing as a reward.

The larger part of heaven, hell, or here - is the ambience we carry to it.

To forget is to ever chance remembering.

IF I COULD FLY

If I could fly you know I would
beyond the mountains and the seashore
I’d soar as high as any bird
and not come down until the sun sets
I’d soar the world, I’d sail the sea
if I could fly
I’d be a different me.

If I were stronger than I am
perhaps I’d fly a little higher
so that I’d never feel again
I lived in darkness or in shadow
I’d tell the world a soft goodbye
and then I’d turn toward the sky
if I could fly, if only I could fly.

There are some things life doesn’t teach
and so I try as best I know how
to grasp the apple beyond reach
and by so doing I can show how
the things I do, I do for you
if I could fly I’d do that too.

If I could fly you know I would
but men are nothing more than men
so the best that I can do is try
and if they knock me down again
oh on broken wings and shattered dreams
I still can try to reach the sky
I may not fly but it doesn’t hurt to try.

I may not fly but it doesn’t hurt to try.
If I could fly
if I could fly
you know I would
if I could fly
you know I would
you know I would
If I could fly
if I could fly
you know I would
if I could fly.
