A Thought for Today

Books ought to be a meeting place for mind and heart - they are where we start our journeys.

This One Does It For Me!

Hi,

As a teenager I thought the world of a poem that included the words:

If I'm still alone by now it's by design.
I only own myself, but all of me is mine.

Now at 43, I have spent close to 20 years looking for that poem and it's come to my attention that Rod was very likely the author. I'd love to see that poem again. If it's his, would you print it on the page?

Thanks a bunch,

Andrea

Your long search has finally ended, Andrea.

"All of Me is Mine" is a song that has appeared on a number of McKuen albums, among them "Rod McKuen in Concert" and "Songs of Rod McKuen Vol. 1." The lyrics also appeared in the songbook "23 Rod McKuen Songs."

The reason you thought it was a poem is probably due to Rod including a number of song lyrics at the end of some of his books. This is what he did in "Stanyan Street & Other Sorrows" and I'm willing to bet this is where you first came across this particular number.

I'm glad we could help and you'll find the lyrics below.

If you have a favorite song, poem or question you'd like answered, drop me a line at kenb@mckuen.com and I'll get to it just as soon as I can.

Rod's random thoughts Only those inside its funnel fully comprehend the hurricane.

Plant something in a friend’s garden. Even if it’s only a new idea.

There are angels in the alcoves we have never met but will.

ALL OF ME IS MINE

If I’m still alone by now it’s by design
I only own myself, but all of me is mine.
But it’s hard sometimes when strangers
offer you a dime
I only own myself, but all of me is mine.

If I still drink water when some folks drink wine
I only own myself, but all of me is mine.
But it’s hard when city windows dance
with candleshine
I only own myself, but all of me is mine.

The price you pay for sunshine
can sometimes be quite dear
when all you have to sell is youth
It’s hard to loose another year
my only forced submission
has been the rape of time.
I only own myself, but all of me is mine.
