A Thought for Today

God never gives any of us more than we can handle. Stretching exercises for the mind, heart and soul are every bit as important as push-ups for the body.

FROM the¨BOOKS

IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE

Bless the children first,
for they need help
just to get them safely
down the block.
With all the mazes
that we make for them
(like teaching them to hate
before they learn to spell)
It is a wonder that they ever find
the door that opens out to adolescence.

Bless the animals
hat sniff the kitchen floor
and those that prowl the hills
Animals, like angels, need protection,
because we use them only
as a substitute for love -
the kind that other people promise us
while they steal our evenings
and before they sneak away.

- from "An Outstretched Hand," 1980

Rod's random thoughts Never fear being alone, because you never are.

You don't have to be born again if you get it right the first time.

Forty percent of life is mail order, and it's getting worse.

THE 1976 CHRISTMAS CARD /
THE YEAR NOW WINDING DOWN

The year
now winding down
I pull my winter coat
a little tighter
and walk out through the snow.

Everywhere the world is waiting
for Father Christmas to come.

I do not think
he'll disappoint us
this time out.
I think he knows
we've earned our toys
our tinsel and out time
to be together peacefully
this year more than ever.

Happy Christmas
to the man in red and white
all the children everywhere
and those who love each other
                 and themselves.

Happy Birthday
to the Christ child
         and the country.

And to you
be happy and be kind
keep Christmas in your heart
be patient. The snow will melt
as our love for all things good
             will go on growing.
