A Thought for Today

Each of us is special because of our differences.

A FLIGHT FROM6THE PAST

AUTUMN POEMS - 30 September 1999

You wouldn't know it's autumn here in Southern California, it has been unseasonably warm with no rain. I even took a chance and set out a dozen new tomato plants on the off chance that El & La Nino will keep it warm enough for me to harvest yet another crop. Today the temperatures hovered around 100.

But the calendar does indicate autumn and it is the last day of September so I've decided to print a few extra autumn poems.

Autumn

Moth fill up the morning
and spiders slide down shafts
                    of sunlight.

It is the autumn of the year
the wind now makes a long,
                                slow moan.
Tired of all the old Octobers
the moan is more a sigh.
Resigned like those of us
               who face the wind
the wind itself on seeing autumn
                           runs to hide.

-from "Too Many Midnight's," 1981

Autumn Is The Mother Church

Always in autumn the hunted hundred
moving separately from the circle
going off into the world
always in autumn.
.
I kneel before the night
my mother church
and taking its round face into my hands
I pull it to me.

I've learned to take each night
as a newfound love,
each autumn night
Is now my friend for keeps
my mother church.

-from Folio #57 & Celebrations of the Heart\, 1975

ADDENDUM

Getting anxious to head back home. Why is it that no matter what hotel, inn or spa you stay in anywhere in the world your room is always the furthest from the ice machine on your floor?

Sleep warm.

Rod's random thoughts Let none who come to know you say you didn’t try.

Being in and out of one another’s favor and embrace causes each of us to try the longer stride next time.

Fear gets lost in understanding.

SEPTEMBER 19

Kelly, lying on his back
his feet up in the air,
looks too uncomfortable to be asleep.
Yet what man or animal would dare
to be so vulnerable awake ?

If we could once let down the guards
there might be other animals
who’d look us over more than once.

Up to your hips in love you lead me on
through bedrooms when it pleases you.
Up to our hearts in lies
we seldom venture past the parlor to tomorrow.
