A Thought for Today

Dreams have taught me to turn my back on nothing that might be something.

FROM the¨BOOKS

THE ADVENTURES OF CLARK KENT

Your body lying easy
in the August day
is not a challenge
but an invitation.
Being lazy too
I leave it to the sun to ravage.
Night -
always more dependable
         than sunshine
has a way of coming 'round on time
and I'm a patient man.

Don't think
I haven't noticed
those intrepid hikers
of the summer beach
who in the guise
of Sunshine Superman
live out the tail ends
of their afternoons
behind half closed
          Venetian blinds
with what they've staked out
           on mid-mornings.

Notice though
the rope I've tied
about your ankle.
No Latin sun
can steal my mistress
for more than
just a single afternoon.

Rod's random thoughts The soul lives beyond the age of its packaging.

There is something to be said for sleeping alone. As soon as I figure out what it is, I'll let you know.

The less there is of time the more we dwell on triumph over it.

WAITING IT OUT

Who hears the lone bark
                         of the dog
without a master or a hearth,
The cat cry in the shadow
of the unattended house,
The moans of lovers when they learn
courage is not quite enough.
Who listens? Not the wind.
And sometimes even God seems deaf
                           to the abandoned.
Be not afraid.
Life is not measured by the give and take,
the yardstick's only life itself.

- from "Suspension Bridge," 1984
