A Thought for Today

I have no quarrel with your lovers, only admiration for their taste.

Dear Ken,

I want to thank you for "This One Does for Me" on Wednesdays.

Last week "No Loving Without Losing" from For Lovers, and today's "I think of You." Both songs touch my heart in a very special way.

The next song of Rod should be "You Wonder why I Love You," Could you print it one day for me when you have the time?

Thanks again.

Elsa Marie

Elsa Marie, you have a talent for introducing me to previously unknown pieces of Rod's work. Unknown by me, that is.

I don't have the album that this particular piece is taken from and after reading some of the words so kindly supplied by Jay Hagan, I'm really devastated that it's taken me so long to discover "For Lovers".

I particularly like the understated introduction in the liner notes:

For Lovers

Music by Anita Kerr / Words by Rod McKuen

The San Sebastian Strings

America’s foremost poet and the first lady of music, Rod McKuen & Anita Kerr, present the newest in a series of albums unparalleled in modern American words and music.

Short, sweet and oh, so true! Thanks for your letter, Elsa Marie, and long may you continue my McKuen education.

The address for your contributions is kenb@mckuen.com and I look forward to hearing more of your McKuen stories sometime soon.

Rod's random thoughts Rain is only rain to some, but holy water to all lovers.

Conscience is the hardest weight to lift.

God has as many faces as the people He looks after.

YOU WONDER WHY I LOVE YOU

I guess I’ve never explained why it is I love you.
I’m not sure if I could.
                      To you or to myself.

Why does the wind carry all of the blossoms
over the hills to the sea ?
Why in return does the sea seldom send
any comfort along for the wind ?
You wonder why I love you...
oh God... if I only knew.

What if I told you
          that loving meant nothing
and we were just playing a game.
You’d still ask questions like...
          how do we play them
and what are the names of those games ?
You wonder why I love you...
oh God... if only I knew.

If I could guess... and I will
I suppose I love you... ‘cause you’re me.
If that doesn’t make sense
hold a mirror up to yourself
five years ago... or even yesterday
and you’ll know what I mean
and how much I love you.
