A
Thought for Today
September is the edge of hope. Travel through it carefully
and with ease.

Happy September to you all. Beginning of
Spring in my part of the world and I can't wait for summer!
Today Rita Barlow takes us back to the 60's
and one of Rod's lesser known songs, "Only Love". The version I have playing
right now is from the "After Midnight" CD and the liner notes state that it's a
demo version. It has a lovely folksy feel to it so it's no surprise to read that it's one
of Rod's earlier compositions.
Thanks Rita - it's always been one of my
favorites, too!
If you have a special piece of McKuen Magic
you'd like to share with us, drop me a line at ken@mckuen.com
and I'll make sure it appears in this regular Wednesday slot.

ONLY LOVE
Reading today's FP and
Johan's letter about the song "The World I Used to Know" made me think about
another McKuen song sung by Glen Yarborough although I like Rod's singing of it even
better. The song is called "Only Love". Back in 1969 I bought a two record LP
album of Glenn Yarborough singing all Rod McKuen songs. One record was the Happy Songs and
the other was the Lonely Songs.
At that time I was a young single Catholic woman sharing an apartment with another ysCw
who was a teacher at the local Catholic High School. Many of the nuns and priests from the
High School would use our apartment as a relaxation canteen. Another friend of mine who
was a retired army Chaplain Catholic priest kept the place supplied with booze that was
donated to him. This group of idealistic educators were very active in a movement called
"Cursillo" which held weekend retreats to get
people to pull away from the world and to spend time thinking about their relationship
with God and their fellow human beings. This Song became the theme song of those weekends.
Every time I hear this song, I think of those days and that youthful
idealism and optimism I felt then. This past year I have been able to regain many of those
feelings thanks to this site and rediscovering Rod's work. So Ken and Rod; thank you again
for what you continue to give to me and to so many others who visit this site daily. |
